Foreign Damage Protection (Auslandsschadenschutz): Your Rights Abroad – What happens if the accident occurs in Serbia, Bosnia, Italy or Croatia?

More and more drivers travel from Germany to other countries – for vacation, family visits, or work. But what if a traffic accident happens while you’re abroad? One important but often overlooked part of your car insurance may make all the difference: Foreign Damage Protection, or Auslandsschadenschutz.

Foreign Damage Protection (Auslandsschadenschutz): Your Rights Abroad – What happens if the accident occurs in Serbia, Bosnia, Italy or Croatia?

As a certified independent car expert (KFZ-Gutachter), I frequently get questions about this topic. That’s why I’d like to explain:

  • what Auslandsschadenschutz actually is,
  • which countries are covered,
  • and what you must do if an accident happens abroad.

Below, you’ll find screenshots from my own insurance agreement with highlights on key points.

 What is Auslandsschadenschutz?

This insurance add-on allows you to claim for damages in Germany even if the accident happened abroad – as long as you were not at fault.

Your benefits:

  • No dealing with foreign insurers
  • No legal or language barriers
  • Compensation based on German standards
  • Faster and more secure damage handling

Where is Auslandsschadenschutz valid?

If you have this protection included in your contract, it typically covers many countries in Europe – but not automatically all!

Example countries where it usually applies:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Serbia
  • Croatia
  • Montenegro
  • Kosovo
  • Italy
  • Austria
  • Switzerland
  • All EU countries (except Germany)

What to do if an accident happens abroad?

  1. Call the police. Always request an official report – it’s required for claims in Germany.
  2. Secure all details. Take pictures, write down the other party’s details (plate number, insurance, etc.).
  3. Don’t repair the vehicle right away. Contact me first – I’ll provide a certified assessment and guide you through the process.
  4. Fill out the European accident report. Keep a copy in your car – you can also get one from me.
  5. Report the damage to your insurance immediately.

Important:

  • Auslandsschadenschutz is not included by default – check your policy!
  • I offer a free policy review – just send me your documents.
  • Highly recommended for anyone driving regularly to Southeast Europe or Italy.
